Over the years, hot beverages, particularly coffee have
been incorporated in the diets of many Filipinos. It is now regarded as an essential item consumed across all income levels
in the country. Parents, professionals, and students who are in a hurry to their workplace and school may avail of it without
fret since coffee shops and convenience stores could now be found with absolute convenience.

So what’s the link between drinking coffee
and having diabetes? Only a few studies of coffee consumption and diabetes mellitus have been accounted, even though coffee
is the most consumed beverage in the world. The incidence for type 2 diabetes on the other hand, continues to rise despite
the active campaign against obesity, which is considered to be the leading most modifiable factor for the disease. According
to the studies projected by the American Base Association in 2004, the Philippines is expected to take its place as a one
of the top ten contenders for the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. While the disease itself may not be alarming to
Filipinos, presumably because of lack of health education, the serious complications it manifests certainly control daily
activities, and therefore should be a subject of attention for the medical society.
